Steps taken towards providing Junction City and Perryville elementary students free breakfast and lunch next year


DANVILLE, KY – MAY 11, 2018 – The Boyle County Board of Education approved Perryville and Junction City elementary schools' participation in the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), at Thursday’s special called board meeting. The program allows the two schools to provide breakfast and lunch to every student at no charge, beginning in the 2018 – 2019 school year.


Joining the CEP ensures that all students will have access to two nutritious meals every school day by eliminating fees and reducing the stigma oftentimes associated with free and reduced meal programs. In addition, the CEP increases school food services efficiencies by streamlining operations and reducing administrative paperwork.


“Participating in the CEP helps us improve the nutritional health of our kids – so that they are ready to learn each and every day," stated Judy Ellis, director of food services for Boyle County Schools. "It guarantees that every student at Perryville and Junction City will have a free, healthy breakfast and lunch, five days a week. It will also ease a little financial burden and stress on our parents.”


With board approval, district administrators have signed a letter of intent for the two schools to join the CEP. Parents will be asked to complete a Household Information Form and the Kentucky Department of Education must review and approve the district’s application before the program begins. 


The CEP is a provision from the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that eliminates the need for schools in low-income areas to collect applications for free and reduced-price meals. Instead, schools are reimbursed using a formula based on the percentage of students participating in other need-based programs. To be eligible for CEP, at least 40 percent of enrolled students must be certified for free school meals without the use of school meal applications, such as those directly certified through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
