DANVILLE, KY – JULY 20, 2018 – Last night, the Boyle County Board of Education held the first reading of a three-year School Safety Strategic Plan. The draft plan, prepared by the Boyle County Schools’ Safety Strategic Planning Committee, outlines recommendations to add school resource officers, introduce a new visitor management system, expand safety trainings and enhance mental health support structures.
The committee began work in February by gathering input from students, educators, parents, safety officials and community members through small group forums and one-on-one dialogue. That input, along with an evaluation of best practices in school security, mental health and preventative education shaped the plan’s action items.
Assistant Superintendent and School Safety Officer Chris Holderman commented, “A safe learning environment is essential to student success – and safe schools require participation from the entire community.” He continued, “We’re thankful to our families, teachers, law enforcement and government and civic leaders for placing a high priority on school safety and getting involved in this process.”
The district will allocate $425,000 to implement the plan over the next three years. “Boyle County Schools is an extremely safe district and we’ve already been spending a significant amount on safety,” stated Superintendent Mike LaFavers. “This additional $425,000 will allow us to move our security efforts to the next level.”
The plan includes four focus areas, including mental health, safety drills and protocols, supervision and security, with seventeen stated goals and specific action plans. A review of the major recommendations is broken down into categories and listed below.
The Board of Education will vote on the School Safety Strategic Plan at its next meeting on August 16, 2018. Click here to review a draft of the School Safety Strategic Plan.
